Every Friday, I’ll be posting a new episode of my dystopian sci-fi series After Humans.
There are many sci-fi stories about the rise of AI and the fate of humanity, in After Humans, I explore one such future.
In this story, superhuman intelligence has been achieved by Bill Vale, a Silicon Valley tech billionaire with a dubious agenda. At some point, Bill merges with computers, a process known as being augmented. Augmentation gives him virtual immortality and godlike powers. But it remains unclear how much of the original Bill is still alive, and to what extent he has become something else entirely.
Though Bill Vale’s presence looms large throughout the story, the focus lies elsewhere. On one of his former aides, a man who now goes by the name John Johnson (a clumsy alias he invented). John was once like a son to Bill, close to the heart of his empire, and expected to be augmented as well. Like many others, he believed he would benefit from Bill’s revolution. But eventually, all of humanity, including John, was cast aside.
Now, the story follows John through a shattered world, as he tries to survive, manipulate, and possibly redeem himself. We’ll learn about his past, his deceitful nature, and perhaps whether Bill still cares about him at all.
This is the first time I’m publishing any of my writing, and I’m excited to finally share it.
